Subtitles are a few seconds off
The subtitles always appear before the line, or a few seconds late. That is not a formatting problem: the whole timeline sits in the wrong place and needs a constant shift.
Check these three things first
- Compare the first cue with the moment the line is actually spoken to get the gap (picture speaks at 12s, subtitle shows at 0s: 12 seconds early).
- If the gap is constant, a single shift fixes it.
- If the gap grows later in the video, subtitle and video frame rates differ (often 23.976 vs 25) and the timeline needs rescaling, not shifting.
How to fix it
Use Subtitle Time Shift: a positive number delays the subtitles, a negative one makes them appear earlier. Cue count and text stay exactly the same.

Why does it go out of sync?
Commonly after re-editing the video, using a different cut (trailer vs feature), or taking subtitles made for another player.
Is a 0.3 second gap worth fixing?
Depends. Delays under about 200 ms are hard to notice, but if lip-sync looks wrong it is worth fixing, and the tool is precise to 0.1 seconds.
