Check first
Check these three things first
- The numbers exist but do not print: they are often part of a footer image or the scan itself. Look at the bottom of the first page before adding anything.
- Numbering restarts at 1 in the middle: a sign of a file assembled from several PDFs, each keeping its own numbering.
- The cover should not be numbered: the first number shown should be 1 on the second page, not 2.
How to fix
How to fix it
Open the page-number tool: it runs in your browser and the file is not uploaded. Set the format, one of nine positions, the font size and the start number, then tick “skip the first page” to keep the cover clean. Bookmarks, page labels and metadata are preserved; only the rendering changes.

Frequently asked questions
Can only some pages be numbered?
Yes: select pages in the grid and only those receive a number. The others stay exactly as they are.
Are existing numbers replaced?
No. Original page labels stay in place and the new numbers are drawn on top as text, so search and the print dialog may still show the old labels.
